How We Met

David & Sarah met at the University of New Hampshire in the fall of 1991. Sarah was a freshman majoring in Computer Science, and David was a sophomore majoring in Music Education.

The details of how they met start with Alexander Hall. During the second semester of David's freshmen year, in order to escape three people crammed in a room built for two, he moved in with a sophomore named Nat who had somehow managed to get a double room to himsef. Nat was a fine room mate (and is important to the story), but nevertheless, the next year David shared a room across the hall with his friend Rob.

When Sarah arrived at UNH, she was assigned a room in Fairchild Hall with Nat's sister, Carol. Very near the start of school Carol brought Sarah and some other girls from Fairchild over to Alexander to meet Nat and some friends, including his new roommate, a freshman named Pete.

Eventually, Pete, Sarah and a few others their way across the hall to the room where David lived with Rob and Bill Fellows (well, Bill really lived down the hall). Dave and Rob had acquired all the amenities that made for a great room for people to congregate in: TV, VCR, very large movie collection, Nintendo, couch, loft, coffee pot and a coffee table (which we still use to this day). A tight-knit group of friends emerged, who spent most of their free time hanging out in the room watching movies and playing cards late into the night.

At first, Sarah and David were just friends, but by the end of the semester they had realized their mutual attraction and things moved beyond friendship. The first official go-out-somewhere-date was to the Codfish in Portsmouth (now the Blue Mermaid) to meet Sarah's aunt Natalie.

At the end of the semester, Pete disappeared from UNH never to be heard from again (although we do know that he placed 209th in the 37th Annual Troy Turkey Trot). At the end of the school year, Rob Fournier also left UNH. He made a brief visit the following year, but then was not heard from again, although we do send him a Christmas card to his parents address each year.

David and Bill Fellows went on to share a room in Alexander the following year and stayed in touch after graduation even as Bill has traveled around the country as a member of he Air Force. David was a Groomsman at Bill's wedding, and Bill will be a Groomsman in David & Sarah's wedding (read more about Bill).

After each living in several places with various room mates, David and Sarah moved into an apartment together in downtown Dover in 1995. They share the apartment with three cats: Puss, Felix and Oscar.

After graduation, Sarah went to work as a Software Engineer at Cabletron Systems (now Aprisma) in Durham NH, where she had worked during school. Sarah eventually moved into a software consulting group and travelled to Germany while working a project for a large German telecom company. After a few years at Cabletron, Sarah worked as Software Engineer at PakNetX (now Aspect) in Salem NH for a year. She currently works as a Software Engineer at Unisphere Networks in Westford MA.

David spent the final semester of his college career student-teaching music at Concord High School. After graduation, he worked for about a year at his father's business, Cape Cod Photo & Art in Orleans MA, while also teaching elementary and middle school music part-time in Maine (Berwick, North Berwick and Lebanon). Hoping to stop the Mass-to-Maine commute and settle in New Hampshire, David took a job in phone tech support at Cabletron Systems (now Enterasys) in Rochester NH (in those days, Cabletron would hire absolutely anyone, no experience required). After a couple years in tech support, David moved into working on Cabletron's web site. In August 2000, David left Cabletorn and started at Net to Net Technologies in Portsmouth NH where he works as a Webmaster.
